Drug Abuse

1. Drug abuse is a pattern of inappropriate drug use that leads to recurrent problems in fulfilling obligations, impaired physical functioning, conflicts with family and friends, and legal problems.

2. Drug abuse may progress to dependence (Addiction), manifested by a strong desire to continue the drug despite the increasing severe problem it causes, tolerance ( a need for larger amounts of the drug to get the same effects) and withdrawal symptoms if the drug is stopped.

What is a Drug?

1. Any substance other than those required for the maintenance of normal health, which, when taken into the living organism, may modify one or more of its functions. (WHO)

2. Medicine : any substance with the potential to prevent or cure disease or enhance physical or mental welfare.

3. Pharmacology : an agent that alters the biochemical or physiological processes of tissues or organisms.
